PAL

Sparta PAL was started in the 1960’s by Fred Geffken (former Sparta Police Chief), with the mission of Police Officers interacting with Sparta Youth in a positive way through athletics. The goal of Sparta PAL Basketball is to provide 4th-8th grade Sparta boys and girls a positive environment to learn and apply the principles of teamwork, discipline, dedication and sportsmanship. It’s all about the kids!

Currently, the Sparta PAL provides programs in boys’ and girls’ basketball, volleyball, and fencing, as well as a variety of other activities at the PAL facility at 38 Station Road. The Sparta PAL, along with the Sparta Police Department, sponsors the Sparta Police Youth Division, which is comprised of approximately 150 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th graders who engage in community service projects in Sparta Township.

In addition, these youth participate in educational programs promoting anti-drugs and anti-violence. This group is led entirely by Sparta Police Officers.

The PAL is now under the direction of the current Chief of Police, Ernest Reigstad. Sparta PAL is a Non-Profit 501-C Corporation for Sparta youth athletes. PAL is funded 100% by donations, registrations, and rental income from the PAL Center.
